American Psycho, that title makes me grin. It really does, and not simply because of the fascination with killers I have developed over the years. No. It is simply put, a dark comedy, a satire on the 1980's culture of the US, and is one of the best films I have ever seen. Oh, and it also makes me smile for this single line; "You're my lawyer and I think you need to know, I killed a lot of people!"

Fantastorific. The film follows out swauve, pretty boy Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale - Equilibrium, The Machinist, Batman Begins) as he leads his good life during the day, and follows his very dangerous obsession. Murder. With a blood splattered suit and nice hair cut. For he is a bee in the, well, bee hive of corporate America. His suit makes him blend in with the rest of the world, and his smooth personality allows his voice to come through like a robot.

It's all about oneupsmanship in this film. While they all blend into one majority, they always try to break out as themselves when no one is around. Never more so that Bateman. The rating of the movie is not so much for the violence either but for the sex scene in the film. And it really isn't that bad, so those of faint minds may only just need a triple heart bypass, and not a full blown instant death situation.

Christian Bale can signify emotions in a single expression and movement of his eyes, somehting which the filmakers needed for the role, someone who can act as a chameleon while showing something not so clone like going on in his thoughts. It is one thing you are not likely to find in major stars, and so the film left hooks you when you first wonder who this cool fella is, not just some suit, but a lunatic in disguise! His erratic thoughts and ations later in the film match his early personality and it just flowed...it was fantabulific. The support cast is a good bunch, but really why would you focus on them? Except for one scene, cough, IT'S ALL BALE ALL THE TIME. And that's the only way for this movie. Now if you hate him then maybe you'll have to avoid the film ;) His quirky talk and jokes are also well delivered to show the two faces of Bateman.

"A SEVEN? Doesn't he kill a lot of people?" Indeed he does, but due to obvious violent items that couldn't possibly be shown from the bok many a time you'll have quick cuts, blank shots, and only the aftermath to see. "Awww..." Yes, well who cares when the actual psychology of the movie is that good? Plus it is still pretty shocking on first viewing. And it's a funny film too, so the blood coulda pulled it down if it was all shown.

The story was straight out of a serial killers mind, if only. It is pieced together so well, and while sometimes people may get confused you can't say after a few minutes of thinking that the script isn't genius. It keeps the pace of the film up through the calm moments and the rough killing scenes. It was never a boring book, and I have to say that the movie doesn't. Even if you're an action fiend, the ideas behind Bateman can keep those of deep thought busy while the dialogue occurs. Mary Harron, I salute you.
